Fighting dogs such as the Tosa have been bred in Japan for centuries. Tosas are recognized today as being the
developed in the 1800's by crossing the best of the Japanese fighting dogs with European imports such as the
Bulldog, Mastiff, Great Dane and Bull Terrier. By combining the size and strength of the imports with the
courage, loyalty and fighting abilities of the Japanese dogs, the Japanese produced the impressive Tosa that
we know today.

The same qualities that make the Tosa a superb fighting dog make them excellent natural guard dogs. Samurai
warriors often attended the matches to learn courage and boldness from the Tosa. They are protective of their
owners and their territory, quick to show aggression and equally willing to back off when their owner gives the word.
They are known for patience and loyalty to their owners. These traits all contribute to making the Japanese Tosa one
of the premier natural guard dogs of the world. Below are photos of Miss Kochi and Kuma, DogStar's original breeding stock imported from Japan through Jack and Elaine Palance. |
