The Neapolitan Mastiff is an extremely powerful and physically impressive breed. DogStar Kennels began raising Neapolitans because of their natural abilities as guard dogs. For modern classification, the Neos are considered one of the working breeds, but their history reaches back to the time of the ancient Greeks and Romans, where they were bred primarily as gladiator dogs and war dogs. Over the years, Neapolitans have been used as guard dogs, as personal protection dogs, and even as aids to law enforcement.

The Neapolitan Mastiff is of Italian origin, and is very popular in Italy as an estate guardian. The first known showing of the Neapolitan was in 1946 at the first dog show ever held in Naples. Neapolitans were recognized in the Working Group by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 2004. At DogStar Kennels, we are concentrating on breeding for soundness, massive overall appearance with broad, wrinkly heads, and, of course, the natural guard dog temperament. Our goals are to continue to breed Neos which are true to the standards set by their European lineage.

The Neapolitan is a strongly built and heavy-boned breed. Our males average 160 pounds. They have a very majestic appearance with a broad and deep chest, which is especially noticeable when they are sitting "at guard." One of their most striking traits is their loose cat-like gait.

The most common color for the Neos is blue/gray. Black is the second most common, then tawny. The mahogany color is the most rare of all, rarely seen even in Europe.

The Neapolitan Mastiffs are home guardians and protection dogs of the highest caliber. Unlike other breeds, who must be trained to guard, the Neapolitan guards as a natural instinct.
